Cursillo (pronounced ‘cur-see-yo’) began in Spain, around 1949, when a group of Spanish Christians endeavoured to recreate and encapsulate into 3-days, their experience of pilgrimage to Santiago di Compostella. This is why there are a number of Spanish terms associated with Cursillo. Today, people who attend a Cursillo weekend continue to experience a sense of pilgrimage. They are on a journey. They don’t know who their companions will be, what adventures they will have along the way; or even where it will all lead. There is a sense of the ‘unknown’, ‘unexpected’ and ‘anticipation’. Like all pilgrimages, it is a journey in faith. God is the constant companion and there will be other pilgrims, too, of different age, ethnicity, interests, abilities etc, encouraging and helping one another along the way
